Some might say you're living the dream, travelling and enjoying island life, tell us a bit about your daily life and what led to your decision to move to Bali?
~
My husband, Jared, and I were both working full-time for big businesses and travelling a total of 35 hours a week for work. We just felt burnt out and at a bit of a loss about how we could ever find a good balance in our lives. In our hearts, we really wanted to pursue careers that we were passionate about and wanted to create more space for our health, our relationship, personal growth, slowing down and travel.

We decided to move on a bit of a whim actually. We visited Bali in June 2017 for the first time and found ourselves living here 10 months later! We loved the sense of community and decided if we didn’t take the chance to live abroad now, we might never do it!

Our daily life here is quite slow and modest, which we love. We wake up in our little studio loft over-looking the rice fields, go to the gym or yoga, either set up in a cafe to work for the day or head out to location to shoot, at night we either meet up with friends or stay in and cook together at home (my favourite). We also spend a bit of time travelling so that can look completely different again. Lots of sunrise shoots and exploring mostly!

The best part of our new life is that we work to how we’re feeling. If I’m feeling creative, I shoot, edit, or design. If i’m feeling stressed or blank, I take time to slow down and rejuvinate. It’s the freedom of being able to work with my mind and body, not against it. It’s such a beautiful experience that I am so thankful for!

How do you minimise your waste when you're travelling and have you got any hot tips for those of us wanting to do the same?

~

My three best tips are:

~ Always bring a reusable water bottle, straw, cutlery and bag with you everywhere

~ Bring your own snacks for flights to avoid plastics

~ Dine in when you can to avoid takeaway packaging

What do you look for when researching the sustainability of a brand and what are two questions we should be asking brands to ensure we're buying consciously?

~

This is a great question. The first thing I look for is the fabric. Are they using sustainable fabrics? It’s great to look for quality cotton, linen, hemp, bamboo or recycled fabrics which are usually found in sustainable swimwear.

The second thing I ask is about is about the workers. Are they paid fairly and working in a safe and fair environment. ie, are they allowed bathroom and lunch breaks, is the building safe to work in, do they have have a maximum of working hours per week, are they paid at or above living wages?

The process of purchasing ethically can be overwhelming at first, but like anything, it’s one step at a time. Know that every little bit of progress is still progress!

What is slow living to you?  What grounds you?

~

To me, slow living is giving your body and mind the opportunity to communicate what it is that you need. I was so used to pushing myself to the limits but now I listen and ask my body what it needs everyday. Once I learned to slow myself, my world around me slowed too. We consume less, eat more mindfully and pursue experiences and relationship over ‘things’.

The things that grounds me the most is taking time away from any and all screens and being in nature, or more specifically, the sand and ocean.
